Why choose a private transfer instead of the bus, train or plane?
There are several ways to travel between the two cities, and each one suits a different traveller:
- Bus: regular coaches run between Sofia and Istanbul, many of them overnight. They are a budget option, but you travel on a fixed timetable, start and finish at bus stations and wait with all other passengers at the border.
- Train: a night rail connection between Bulgaria and Turkey exists, but timetables and changes vary through the year, so check the current schedule with the railway operators before you plan around it.
- Flight: the flight itself is short, but you need to reach the airport early, pass security, wait for your luggage and then cross Istanbul from the airport to your hotel.
- Private transfer: you choose the departure time, the car picks you up at your address, your luggage stays with you in the vehicle and you get out at your hotel or apartment in Istanbul.
For families, groups of friends and travellers with a lot of luggage, a car with a driver is often the most comfortable choice, because the price is for the whole vehicle and the trip is door to door.
The route from Sofia to Istanbul
The usual route leaves Sofia on the Trakia motorway towards Plovdiv, then continues south-east past Haskovo on the Maritsa motorway to Svilengrad and the border. After Kapitan Andreevo – Kapıkule, the road passes Edirne and follows the Turkish motorway across Eastern Thrace to Istanbul. Most of the trip is on motorways.
Stops on the way
On a drive of this length most passengers want at least one short break for coffee, food or the restroom. If you plan a longer stop, for example to see Plovdiv or Edirne, add it when you book: the booking form on our homepage has an Add Stops option where you can enter the place and the time at the stop, so that it is included in your request from the start.
Crossing the border at Kapitan Andreevo – Kapıkule
Kapitan Andreevo – Kapıkule is the main road crossing between Bulgaria and Turkey. You pass two checks: the Bulgarian exit check and the Turkish entry check (passport control and customs). Passengers usually stay in the car or follow the officers' instructions when documents are checked.
Documents you need
- A valid passport (some nationalities may also enter Turkey with a national ID card – check whether this applies to you).
- A Turkish visa or e-visa, if your nationality requires one. Visa rules depend on your passport, so check the official Turkish government information before the trip and apply for an e-visa online if needed.
- For children travelling with only one parent or with other adults, extra documents may be required – check this in advance.
The vehicle documents and insurance for driving in Turkey are the driver's responsibility, not yours as a passenger.
How long is the wait at the border?
Outside the busy periods the border check usually takes a short time. Waiting can take much longer in summer, especially in July and August when many families drive between Western Europe and Turkey, and around public holidays in Bulgaria and Turkey. Weekends and Sunday evenings can also be busier. Plan some extra time if you have a flight or an important appointment in Istanbul.
Best time to leave Sofia
- Early morning departure: leaving Sofia early usually means a quieter border and arrival in Istanbul in the afternoon, before the heaviest evening traffic.
- Avoid the city rush hours: Istanbul traffic can be very heavy in the morning and evening rush hours, so the last part of the trip may take longer than the kilometres suggest.
- Catching a flight in Istanbul: allow generous extra time for the border and the city traffic, especially in summer and on holidays.
