Over Deve Bair and into the Rila mountains
From the airport at Petrovec the car goes east via Kumanovo and Kriva Palanka and climbs to the border at Deve Bair, with Gyueshevo on the Bulgarian side. North Macedonia is outside the EU and Bulgaria is in Schengen, so documents are checked in both directions. An ID card is enough for EU citizens.
The pass is high, and in January and February it can be snowy. Our cars on this route have winter tyres, and the driver carries snow chains when the forecast calls for them. After Kyustendil the road runs through Dupnitsa and across the hills to Samokov, and the last ten kilometres climb through the pine forest to Borovets.

Borovets is the oldest mountain resort in Bulgaria. It began as a royal hunting lodge at the end of the 19th century and is now known for its long night skiing runs and the gondola up to Yastrebets. Musala, the highest peak in the Balkans, rises right above the resort.
