The route through the mountains
The car takes the Arbën Xhaferi motorway south west past Prizren to the Vërmica – Morina border. In Albania the A1, often called the Road of the Nation, crosses the mountains past Kukës through long tunnels and comes down to the plain near Milot.
From there the road goes south past Durrës and Fier, and the last part follows the coast into Vlorë. Most of the way is motorway or wide road, but there are slower sections near the towns.
The border between Kosovo and Albania is usually easy, and an ID card is enough for most travellers from the region and the EU. The busy time is July and August, when the whole road can be slow on Saturdays and at the start of the holidays.
Stops and destinations
On a long drive a break is normal. The driver can stop for coffee in Kukës, or for lunch in a roadside restaurant on the plain, whenever you ask. If your hotel is further south, in Orikum, Radhimë or over the Llogara pass in Dhërmi, we can drive you there too.
