This guide is about the road from Istanbul to the Bulgarian Black Sea coast: Burgas, Varna and the resorts around them, plus Plovdiv for travellers who go inland. You will find the prices from both Istanbul airports, the short border crossing through the Strandzha mountains, how long the trip takes in each season, where the car waits for you and what to ask before you book. Going to Sofia instead? Read our Istanbul Airport to Sofia transfer guide.
Each price is for the whole vehicle, one way – one traveller or a full car pay the same. A sedan takes up to 4 passengers, a minivan up to 6 and a minibus up to 8. Four adults with big summer suitcases or sports bags travel more comfortably in a minivan.

Prices, kilometres and hours come from our Burgas pricelist, Varna pricelist and Plovdiv pricelist. The lines are “from or to”, so Burgas or Varna to Istanbul costs the same. Driving times do not include the border. Groups over 8 and extra stops are priced on request.
The hours in the table are pure driving time. What changes the trip is the border and, in winter, the mountain road. Use this as a guide when you choose your pickup time:
| When | What to expect | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Spring and autumn, working days | close to the driving time in the table | regular traffic and usually short checks |
| June to September, above all weekends | more time at the border and on the coast road | the beach season: holiday traffic in both directions and full resorts around Burgas and Varna |
| Late August, early September and the Bayram holidays | the busiest days of the year | families drive home after the summer and travel for the holidays |
| Winter, December to March | extra time after snow or in fog | the road through the Strandzha mountains is narrow and winding; the driver may switch to the motorway via Edirne |
Arriving on an evening flight in July? Tell us the flight number and we will tell you honestly when you can expect to be at your hotel.
The kilometres in our pricelist follow the shortest road. From Istanbul the car crosses Eastern Thrace to Kırklareli, climbs into the forests of the Strandzha mountains and reaches the border at Dereköy (Turkey) – Malko Tarnovo (Bulgaria). On the Bulgarian side the road comes down through the Strandzha Nature Park to the coast and Burgas. For Varna the car continues north along the coast. It is a quiet, green road with many bends, and the smaller crossing is often calmer than the big motorway border.
If the mountain road is closed, slow after snow, or the queue at Malko Tarnovo is long, the driver takes the motorway to Edirne and crosses at Kapıkule – Kapitan Andreevo, then drives on Bulgarian motorways to Burgas. The way is longer, but it is open day and night and easy in any weather. The driver decides on the day, and the price stays the same. For Plovdiv we always use Kapıkule, because it lies directly on the way.
The driver handles the car papers and insurance. The rules for people depend on your citizenship, so please check them before the trip.
More about arrivals at the new airport is on our Istanbul New Airport transfers page, and for the Asian side see Sabiha Gökçen Airport transfers.
Yes. For beach holidays with big suitcases, prams, bikes or golf bags, choose a minivan – it works like a car with an extra-large boot. Skis and snowboards go the same way in winter. Pets travel with their owners; tell us when you book. Please note that the EU has strict veterinary rules for dogs and cats arriving from Turkey, so check the papers your pet needs long before the trip.
There is no prepayment. You book by phone, Viber, WhatsApp or the online form, and you pay the driver at the end of the trip. The price is fixed when you book and does not change if your flight is late or the border is slow.
The prices are the same in both directions. If you are catching a flight from Istanbul, we work out the pickup time backwards from your departure: the driving time, a reserve for the border (bigger in summer and on holidays), the time your airline asks for check-in at IST or SAW and, in winter, the extra hour on Turkish clocks. Travelling from Sofia? See our Sofia to Istanbul transfer guide.
From Istanbul Airport (IST) to Burgas it costs 245 € by sedan for up to 4 people, 343 € by minivan for up to 6 and 372 € by minibus for up to 8. From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) it is 294 €, 392 € or 421 €. Every price is for the whole car, one way, with nothing paid in advance.
From Istanbul Airport (IST) to Varna it costs 343 € by sedan, 441 € by minivan and 539 € by minibus. From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) it is 392 €, 490 € or 588 €. Pickups in the old city or on the Asian side of Istanbul are priced on request.
Our pricelists give about 310 km and 3:40 h from Istanbul Airport to Burgas and about 430 km and 5:45 h to Varna. From Sabiha Gökçen add roughly an hour. The time at the border comes on top and changes with the season.
Normally Dereköy – Malko Tarnovo, on the short road through Kırklareli and the Strandzha mountains. If that road is closed, very slow or covered in snow, the driver takes the motorway via Edirne and Kapıkule – Kapitan Andreevo instead.
In the public arrivals hall, after passport control, baggage reclaim and customs. The car waits in the airport car park and the driver walks there with you. We follow your flight, so if it lands late the driver waits for free, with no time limit.
Yes. The same car drives on to any hotel on the coast, for example in Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Sozopol or Golden Sands. These addresses are priced on request; send the hotel name and we confirm a fixed price within 24 hours.
From the end of October to the end of March, Bulgaria is one hour behind Turkey, so your watch goes back one hour at the border. In summer the time is the same in both countries.
No. There is no prepayment: you book by phone, Viber, WhatsApp or the online form and pay the driver at the end of the trip. The price is fixed when you book and does not change if your flight is late.
