Two roads into Bulgaria from the west

From Skopje: Deve Bair – Gyueshevo

The direct road runs north-east from Skopje past Kumanovo and Kriva Palanka and climbs to the Deve Bair pass, where North Macedonia meets Bulgaria at Gyueshevo. On the Bulgarian side it drops to Kyustendil and continues via Radomir and Pernik into Sofia. It is the shortest line, but the climb to the pass is a winding mountain road. After heavy snow the driver may choose the longer motorway through Serbia – north to Niš, then east to Kalotina, the same road as from Belgrade.

From Belgrade and Niš: Gradina – Kalotina

From Belgrade the motorway goes south to Niš and then east past Bela Palanka, Pirot and Dimitrovgrad to Gradina – Kalotina, the busiest crossing between Serbia and Bulgaria, open day and night. From there the road passes Dragoman and Slivnitsa and enters Sofia from the west. Starting in Niš you simply join the same road halfway, which is why the trip is only about 2:30 h.

Entering Bulgaria: what changes at the border

Leaving Serbia or North Macedonia is usually quick. The longer stop is on the Bulgarian side, because here you enter the European Union and the Schengen area:

  • Passport control for everyone: keep all passports with you in the car, not packed in a suitcase.
  • Entry/Exit System: visitors from outside the EU give fingerprints and a photo on their first entry, so the first time takes a little longer.
  • EU customs limits apply to goods such as cigarettes and alcohol.
  • Clocks go forward one hour: Bulgaria is one hour ahead of Serbia and North Macedonia all year.

Queues follow the calendar. In July and August and over the Christmas and New Year holidays, many families drive home through these crossings and Kalotina can be slow, above all at weekends. On normal weekdays in spring and autumn it is usually fast. Your driver carries the car documents and handles the formalities.

Catching a flight at Sofia Airport

If the trip ends at a departure gate, we plan the pickup backwards from the time on your ticket:

  1. the driving time from the table above,
  2. a reserve for the border, bigger in summer and on holidays,
  3. the time your airline wants you at the airport before an international flight,
  4. the hour you lose at the border – your ticket shows Bulgarian time.

For example, with a 16:00 flight from Sofia and a pickup in Belgrade: about 4:45 h of driving, a reserve for Kalotina and two hours at the airport give a start of around 8:00 Bulgarian time – 7:00 on a Belgrade clock. In summer we add more. The dispatcher works this out with you when you book. Sofia Airport has two terminals; tell us which one is on your ticket and the driver stops at its departures entrance.

Further into Bulgaria: Plovdiv and the Black Sea

There is no need to change cars in Sofia. The same driver can continue to Plovdiv or to the coast at the fixed prices of our Plovdiv pricelist and the Burgas and Varna pricelists:

Where the driver picks you up

  • An address in Skopje, Niš, Belgrade or a town on the way: the driver is there on time and waits 15 minutes, so have your bags ready.
  • An airport: at Belgrade Nikola Tesla, Niš Constantine the Great or Skopje International the driver meets you in arrivals. We track the flight, and a late landing means free waiting with no time limit.
  • In Sofia we stop at your hotel or apartment, the central railway or bus station, or Sofia Airport.
Before you book
  • Nothing to pay up front: you pay for the trip, not for the reservation.
  • Children travel safely at no extra cost: infant carriers, child seats and boosters are free.
  • Room for any group: over 200 sedans, about 50 minivans, about 100 buses and some 20 Mercedes E- and S-Class cars.
  • Plans changed? Changes are free up to 24 hours before pickup.

Which border crossing do you use on the way to Sofia?

From Skopje we normally cross at Deve Bair – Gyueshevo, on the road through Kriva Palanka and Kyustendil. From Belgrade and Niš we cross at Gradina – Kalotina, on the motorway through Pirot and Dimitrovgrad. On the day of the trip the driver can choose the other way if one crossing is closed or very slow.

Is there a time difference between Serbia, North Macedonia and Bulgaria?

Yes. Bulgaria is one hour ahead of Serbia and North Macedonia all year round. When you cross into Bulgaria, add one hour to your watch. This matters most when you are going to a flight from Sofia Airport, because the departure time on your ticket is Bulgarian time.

Can you take us straight to Sofia Airport for our flight?

Yes. Tell us the flight number and the departure time and we plan the pickup time with you, including the drive, a reserve for the border and the time your airline asks for check-in. The drop-off at Sofia Airport is confirmed with the quote.

Do I need my passport to enter Bulgaria from Serbia or North Macedonia?

Yes. Bulgaria is in the European Union and in the Schengen area, so the crossing from Serbia or North Macedonia is an external Schengen border with full passport control. Travellers from outside the EU are also registered in the EU Entry/Exit System. The rules depend on your citizenship, so please check them before the trip.
