Two ways across the Danube

Via Ruse and the Danube Bridge (the usual way)

Most of our drivers take this road. From Sofia the car heads north-east on the Hemus motorway past Botevgrad, continues through the Pleven area and Byala and reaches Ruse, the biggest Bulgarian town on the river. The Danube Bridge links Ruse with Giurgiu, and from there it is roughly 65 km of national road (DN5) to the southern edge of Bucharest.

The bridge was under a long overhaul from July 2024, often with only one lane open. The works were completed and traffic in both directions was restored on 30 June 2026, so crossing by car is now much smoother than in the last two summers.

Via Vidin and the New Europe Bridge

The western option goes north from Sofia through Vratsa and Montana to Vidin, crosses to Calafat and then runs through Craiova to Bucharest. It covers more kilometres, so we use it mainly when there is a problem at Ruse or when you want to stop in Craiova or North-West Bulgaria. Tell us when you book if you have a preference.

Driving time by season

The 5 h 30 min in our pricelist is a normal day with one short break. What really changes the time is the season, the day of the week and the weather in the Balkan mountains.

When you travelPlan forWhy
Weekdays, spring and autumnabout 5 h 30 minlight traffic, quick bridge crossing
Early morning or night departureoften a little lessempty roads and an easy entry into Bucharest
Summer weekends, Bulgarian and Romanian holidays6 h 30 min or moreholiday traffic between Romania and the Bulgarian coast and mountains
Winteradd about 1 hoursnow on the roads north of Sofia, fog along the Danube
Arriving in Bucharest at rush houradd 30–60 minslow traffic into the city and towards Otopeni

Example day: leave central Sofia at 7:00, coffee break near Pleven, cross the bridge at Ruse around 11:00, and you can be at a hotel in Bucharest soon after 12:30 in normal traffic. If you have an evening flight from Otopeni, keep at least one free hour in your plan.

The border and waiting at the bridge

Bulgaria and Romania both became full Schengen members on 1 January 2025, so the Ruse – Giurgiu and Vidin – Calafat crossings no longer have regular passport control. In most cases the car slows down, pays the bridge toll and continues.

Have your passport or ID card with you anyway. Police can still make random checks, and hotels in Romania ask for a document at check-in. Travellers from outside the EU should check the Schengen rules for their passport before the trip. Children travelling with only one parent may need extra papers.

Waiting today comes mostly from trucks and holiday traffic, not from the officers. Long lines of lorries can still build up near the bridges; if you have a tight connection, tell us and we will plan the departure with extra time. The toll, the Romanian road vignette and the car's documents are the driver's job; you stay in your seat.

Where the car waits for you

In Sofia

  • Sofia Airport (both terminals): your driver is in the Arrivals hall of Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 when you come out, and takes you to the car. Give us your flight number: if the plane lands late, we see it and the driver waits at no extra charge. All airport routes are listed on our Sofia Airport transfers page.
  • Hotels: the car stops at the hotel entrance and the driver comes to reception.
  • Homes and offices: the car comes to the exact street address you give us, whether it is a flat in Lozenets or an office on Tsarigradsko Shose.

On the way

You travel in the same car with the same driver from start to finish, with no change of vehicle at the border. Breaks for coffee, food or the restroom are made when you need them; a longer stop, for example in Ruse or Veliko Tarnovo, can be added with the Add Stops option of the booking form and is priced on request.

Pickup in Bucharest and at Otopeni Airport

The route works just as well from Romania to Bulgaria. In Bucharest we can collect you from a hotel, an apartment, an office or the railway station. At Henri Coandă International Airport (Otopeni) the driver waits for you in the Arrivals hall, after you have collected your bags. Because we follow your flight, a late landing does not cost you extra.

A common combination is to fly into Otopeni and be driven straight to Sofia, Ruse, the Black Sea coast or a ski resort in Bulgaria. See all routes on our Bucharest Otopeni Airport transfers page or the transfers from and to Romania list.

Which vehicle to choose

For a drive of more than five hours, comfort matters more than on a short city ride, so count suitcases as carefully as people. A couple or a family of three with normal luggage fits well in a sedan; with big suitcases, skis or a pram, take the minivan even for four people. Groups of seven or eight go in the 8+1 van, and sports teams or company groups in a 16+1 minibus.

The group behind Book Transfer runs around 200 sedans, 50 minivans, 100 vans and 20 Mercedes S-Class and E-Class cars, so finding a free car is rarely the issue, even at short notice. Child seats come at no extra cost; just tell us how old each child is.
