For families, small groups and anyone with a lot of luggage, a car with a driver is usually the most relaxed way to make this trip.
The usual route leaves Sofia to the south-west on the Struma motorway (E79), past Pernik, Dupnitsa and Blagoevgrad. South of Simitli the road goes through the Kresna Gorge, a winding single-carriageway section where trucks and summer traffic can slow everyone down. After Sandanski the motorway takes you to the border at Kulata.
On the Greek side the road passes Promachonas and runs through the Rupel area along the Strymonas river, then continues south on the motorway towards Serres and Thessaloniki.
The route passes close to two well-known places in South-West Bulgaria, and you can add a stop when you book:
Use the Add Stops option in the booking form on our homepage and write the place and how long you want to stay. A transfer with stops is priced on request.
Kulata – Promachonas is the main road crossing between Bulgaria and Greece. Since Bulgaria became a full member of the Schengen area on 1 January 2025, this is an internal Schengen border, so normally there are no systematic passport checks and cars pass without the long stops of the past.
The slow parts are more often the traffic itself than the border: on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings in summer many holidaymakers from Bulgaria and Romania drive to the Greek beaches, especially Halkidiki and the coast near Kavala, and on Sunday afternoons the same traffic comes back north.
Example plan: pickup in central Sofia at 8:00, a 20-minute coffee stop near Sandanski, the border at Kulata around 10:30–11:00 and arrival at your hotel in Thessaloniki around 12:00–12:30 in normal traffic.
The same works in the other direction: we can pick you up in Thessaloniki and drive you to Sofia or Sofia Airport.
When you book, tell us the number of passengers and suitcases and any bulky items such as skis, a bicycle, a pram or a wheelchair.
As a rule of thumb: the 4+1 passenger car for up to 4 people with normal luggage, the 6+1 minivan for families, the 8+1 van for bigger groups or a lot of luggage, and the 16+1 minibus for groups and company trips.
Travelling with small children? Baby seats are available if requested – please write the age of each child in the booking.
There are no charges for booking modifications up to 24 hours prior to pick-up.
210 € for a sedan with up to 4 passengers, 260 € for a minivan with up to 6 and 310 € for a minibus with up to 8. Prices are per car, one way. For more than 8 passengers the price is on request.
About 3 hours 45 minutes for roughly 295 km in normal traffic. On summer weekends and holidays allow 4 hours 30 minutes or more.
Since Bulgaria joined the Schengen area in 2025 there are normally no systematic checks at Kulata – Promachonas, but random checks are possible, so carry your passport or ID card.
