There is no direct train between Plovdiv and Thessaloniki, and the bus usually means a change in Sofia and a long day with the bags. In a private car you leave at the hour you choose, you stop when you need a break, and the driver brings you to the door of your hotel, flat or office in Thessaloniki. It is the easy way to reach a flight from Thessaloniki Airport, a holiday in Northern Greece or a business meeting in the city.

Plovdiv to Thessaloniki prices and travel time

Every price is for the vehicle, not per person, for one direction. The times are pure driving time, without breaks.

Prices, kilometres and hours from our Plovdiv pricelist (Sofia and Burgas lines from the Sofia and Burgas pricelists). The price is fixed when you book and works in both directions. Places without a line in the pricelist and groups over 8 are priced on request.

The road from Plovdiv to Thessaloniki

  • Plovdiv to Sofia: the car takes the Trakia motorway west, past Pazardzhik, and goes around Sofia on the ring road.
  • The Struma valley: south on the Struma motorway past Pernik, Dupnitsa and Blagoevgrad. The narrow part is the Kresna Gorge, where the road is still the old two-lane one and trucks are slow.
  • Sandanski and Kulata: after Sandanski the motorway runs to the Kulata – Promachonas border. Sandanski is the natural place for a coffee break before Greece.
  • Promachonas to Thessaloniki: on the Greek side a motorway runs past Serres and comes into Thessaloniki from the north.

The other way is to the south-east, through Kardzhali and the Makaza – Nymfaia crossing, then west on the Egnatia motorway. It is a mountain road on the Bulgarian side and not shorter, so we use it only when it makes sense on the day. You do not have to choose: the dispatcher and the driver decide and tell you in advance.

Crossing the border at Kulata – Promachonas

  • No regular passport control: Bulgaria and Greece are both in Schengen, so cars normally drive through. Keep your passport or ID card with you, not in the boot, because spot checks are still possible.
  • The same clock: Plovdiv and Thessaloniki are in the same time zone, so there is no hour to add.
  • The same money: both countries pay in euro. You pay us in euro, to the driver, at the end of the trip.
  • Queues: without passport control the border is usually quick, but on busy summer weekends there can be slow traffic before Kulata. That is why the time of departure matters more than the border itself.

When to leave: travel time by season

SeasonWhat to expect
July and August, Friday to SundayThe busiest time on the Struma motorway and at Kulata – Promachonas: half of the Balkans drives to the Greek beaches. Leave Plovdiv early in the morning and plan extra time.
Greek and Bulgarian holidays (Easter, early May, 15 August)Long lines of cars in both directions around the holiday weekends. Tell us your flight time from Thessaloniki and we plan the start with a good reserve.
Spring and autumnThe calmest months. The trip is close to the pricelist time, plus one coffee break.
WinterFog in the Thracian plain in the morning, rain or wet road in the Kresna Gorge. The driver goes calmly; plan half an hour more.

Flying out of Thessaloniki? Tell the dispatcher your flight time. We count back the driving time, the break and a reserve for the border, and give you the pickup hour in Plovdiv.

Where the driver waits for you

  • At your address or hotel in Plovdiv: the driver comes to the door at the agreed time and waits 15 minutes for free. In the pedestrian centre and the Old Town he waits at the nearest street a car can reach and calls you.
  • At Plovdiv Airport: the driver meets you in the arrivals hall, with a name sign if you like. We follow your flight, so if it lands late the waiting at the airport is free for as long as it takes. The airport pickup is priced with your quote.
  • In Thessaloniki: we stop at your hotel, flat, office, the port or the train station. A drop-off at Thessaloniki Airport or in Halkidiki is priced on request.
  • The way back: for a return from Thessaloniki to Plovdiv the driver waits at the entrance of your hotel or at your address at the agreed time, and calls you when he is there.
