The price and the booking form for this route are on our Sofia to Belgrade transfer and taxi page. Here we answer what people ask the dispatcher before they book: When should we leave? How long is the border? Where can we stop? Will our bags fit?
Each price is for the vehicle, not per person, and covers one direction. Times exclude the border and breaks.
Prices, kilometres and hours from our Sofia pricelist and Plovdiv pricelist. The amount is fixed when you book. Groups over 8, a drop-off at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport and extra sightseeing stops are confirmed on request, within 24 hours.
The car leaves Sofia to the north-west and follows the main road past Slivnitsa and Dragoman to Kalotina, the Bulgarian side of the border. After Gradina on the Serbian side the road soon becomes motorway and runs past Dimitrovgrad and Pirot, along the Nišava valley, around Niš and then north along the Morava valley to Belgrade. Most of the Serbian part is motorway, so after the border the drive is steady.
Kalotina – Gradina is the main road crossing between Bulgaria and Serbia and is open day and night. Here you leave the European Union and the Schengen area, so there is a passport check on both sides. Entry rules depend on your passport and can change, so here are only the general points:
The best start depends on when you want to arrive and on the day of the week. Remember that Serbia is one hour behind Bulgaria all year: if you leave Sofia at 8:00, it is 7:00 in Belgrade.
| Leaving Sofia | The road | You arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning (5:00–7:00) | quiet roads out of Sofia, often a short queue at the border | Belgrade around lunch time; best for a same-day meeting or an afternoon flight from BEG |
| Mid-morning (8:00–10:00) | a relaxed start, comfortable for families with children | Belgrade in the early afternoon; time for a long lunch stop on the way |
| Afternoon (13:00–16:00) | often fine on weekdays; slower on Fridays and before holidays | Belgrade in the evening, after the city rush hour |
| Night (after 21:00) | little traffic and often a quick border crossing | Belgrade after midnight; only if your hotel has a 24-hour reception |
Busy dates to avoid if you can: Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, the first and last weekends of the school summer holidays, and the days around Christmas, New Year and Easter, when many families from Serbia and Western Europe drive through this crossing.
Example: pickup in central Sofia at 8:00. With about 4:45 h of driving, the border and one 30-minute lunch break, you reach Belgrade at around 13:30–14:00 Sofia time – that is 12:30–13:00 on a Belgrade clock.
Tell the driver when you need a break, or tell us at booking where you want to stop.
A lunch stop in Niš adds about an hour. For a longer visit, tell us when you book so that time and price are clear.
Seats are only half of the question; the other half is the boot.
| Your group | Car | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 people, normal bags | Sedan | plenty of space; a good choice for a business trip |
| 4 people with big suitcases, or skis, bikes, a pram | Minivan | a full sedan has no room left for bulky luggage |
| 5–6 people | Minivan | up to 6 passengers plus the driver |
| 7–8 people, or a family moving with many bags | Minibus | one car for the whole group |
| 9 and more | Minibus or bus | priced on request; several cars can travel together |
Travelling with small children? Baby carriers, child seats and boosters are free; tell us how many you need. Pets travel together with their owner – mention them when you book.
Our Sofia pricelist gives 314 € for a sedan (up to 4 people), 392 € for a minivan (up to 6) and 451 € for a minibus (up to 8). It is one price for the whole car and one direction, and it does not change if the border is slow.
About 4:45 h for roughly 400 km, plus the time at the Kalotina – Gradina border and any breaks you want. With one lunch stop, plan about five and a half to six hours door to door.
Early morning or late evening usually give the quietest roads and the shortest border queue. Avoid Friday afternoons, the start of July and August, and the days around Christmas, New Year and Easter if your dates are flexible.
Yes. A coffee or lunch break is part of the trip; just tell the driver when you need one. Niš, at about 2:30 h from Sofia, is the natural half-way stop. Longer sightseeing stops should be mentioned when you book so that we can plan the time.
Book a minivan. A sedan takes four passengers, but with four big suitcases, skis or a pram there is not enough boot space, so four people with luggage travel in a minivan for up to 6.
No. There is no prepayment for a Sofia to Belgrade transfer. You book by phone, chat or the price request form and pay the driver at the end of the trip.
