Brasov is the gateway to Transylvania: the old town under Mount Tampa, the ski slopes of Poiana Brasov and the castles of Bran and Rasnov. By bus or train the trip from Sofia usually means a change in Bucharest and a long wait. In a private car you leave when you want, stop where you want and arrive at the door of your hotel.

Prices to Brasov from Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas

Each price is for the vehicle, not per person, and covers one direction. Times are pure driving time, without breaks.

Prices, kilometres and hours from our Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas pricelists. The price is fixed when you book. Places without a line in the pricelist and groups over 8 are priced on request.

The road from Sofia to Brasov

  • Sofia to Ruse: the car crosses northern Bulgaria to Ruse, the big city on the Danube. This is the longest part in Bulgaria and a good place for the first coffee break.
  • Ruse – Giurgiu to Bucharest: you cross the Danube on the Friendship Bridge and drive on to Bucharest, about an hour away. The car takes the ring road around the city, so you do not lose time in the centre.
  • Bucharest to Brasov: after Ploiesti the road climbs into the Carpathians through the Prahova Valley, past Sinaia, Busteni and Predeal, and comes down to Brasov. This last part is the most beautiful and also the slowest.

From Plovdiv the car first goes north through the Balkan Mountains and joins the same road to Ruse. From Varna and Burgas it also heads north to the Danube, so the second half of the trip is the same.

Crossing into Romania

Since 2025 Bulgaria and Romania are both full members of the Schengen area. In practice this means:

  • No regular passport control on the bridge between Ruse and Giurgiu. Police can still stop cars for a check, so keep your passport or ID card with you, not in the boot.
  • The same time zone: Romania and Bulgaria use the same clock, so there is no hour to add or take away.
  • The money changes: Bulgaria uses the euro, Romania the leu. You pay us in euro, to the driver; for coffee on the way a bank card works almost everywhere.
  • Traffic, not the border, sets the time: the bridge and the Bucharest ring road can be slow at rush hour, and the Prahova Valley is busy on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, when people from Bucharest drive to and from the mountains.

When to leave Sofia

Almost nine hours of driving is a full day. An early start gives you daylight on the mountain road and an arrival before dinner.

Leaving SofiaThe roadYou arrive
Very early (5:00–6:30)empty roads to the Danube and through Bucharest before the morning rushBrasov in the early afternoon, with daylight in the mountains
Morning (7:00–9:00)a comfortable start, good for families with childrenBrasov in the late afternoon; one long lunch break fits in
Afternoon (after 12:00)Bucharest ring road and the Prahova Valley in the evening rushBrasov late in the evening; only if your hotel has a 24-hour reception
Night (after 21:00)little traffic, but the mountain road in the darkBrasov early in the morning; better split the trip into two days

Example: pickup in central Sofia at 6:00. With about 8:45 h of driving, a coffee in Ruse and a lunch break in the Prahova Valley, you reach Brasov at around 16:30–17:00.

In winter snow can slow the last part over the mountains, and in the ski season the road to Poiana Brasov is busy on weekends. Leave early and give yourself a buffer if you have a dinner or a ski pass to catch.

Where to stop on the way

Tell the driver when you need a break, or tell us at booking where you want to stop.

  • Ruse: about half-way, with cafes on the main square and a view of the Danube.
  • Sinaia: the mountain town with Peles Castle, about an hour before Brasov – a good place for lunch.

For a longer visit, for example to see Peles Castle inside, tell us when you book so that time and price are clear.
